Aptitude vs. Attitude ( great information for beginner students)

	Aptitude vs. Attitude by Dave Isaacs When I was working primarily with children I would often have parents ask me whether their child had any aptitude for music. My usual response was in the affirmative, because I genuinely do believe that everyone has the potential to learn to make music in one form or another. The dictionary definition of “aptitude” is “capacity for learning”, and I have yet to work with a student that has no capacity or potential ability to learn. However, I’ve worked with plenty of students over the years whose attitude was an obstacle. Sometimes their belief in their own potential wasn’t sufficient to sustain them through the work of learning the instrument, while others underestimated the commitment required and weren’t prepared to adjust their expectations. The key words here are “work” and “commitment”….natural aptitude or talent are helpful but NOT the essential ingredient. I have come to believe that “talent” is really a matter of how quickly one learns to process and master a skill. Naturally gifted people go through the same learning process as the rest of us, they just do it more quickly. That’s not to say that anyone can be a great guitarist, or dancer, or baseball player….there are limits, to be sure…..but anyone can learn enough concrete skills to be able to enjoy the experience. Complete and total mastery is a lofty goal but beside the point. You don’t need to be Tiger Woods to play a satisfying golf game, and you don’t need to be Vince Gill to be a strong singer and guitarist. More importantly, you don’t have to be Vince Gill to learn to be a stronger singer or player than you are right now. The talent/aptitude mindset is a trap to be avoided. Those who have great gifts probably know it already, but no amount of talent will replace the necessity of hard work and practice. The best players I know played constantly when they were learning, and if they still do so will continue to learn and improve. Whether they have talent or not doesn’t enter their minds, they just do the work. And there’s no reason for it to enter yours: if you believe you’re not capable of getting better, you won’t. If you’ve been playing or singing for any amount of time and you haven’t improved in a while, ask yourself if you’ve made a conscious effort recently. If you don’t know what to do in order to make that effort, find a good teacher, search the internet for instructional materials, or work from books….in my opinion you can never have too many music books! There are countless resources out there but they won’t do you any good unless you seek them out, no matter what gifts you were given. So be grateful for whatever gifts you possess….but when it comes to music or any other endeavor you undertake, remember that it is your mindset that matters most: attitude and not aptitude.

There are many music instructors to choose from . It is important that any student or parent
wanting quality instruction in music choose a teacher that is best suited for the student. Cost
should not be a factor when choosing a music teacher. You usually get what you pay for .

(1) I have been teaching private lessons for over 35 years. I have learned that each student
has a different learning style and that a method for one student may not apply for another.

(2) I have a BS in Music Education. Doctors, lawyers, dentist and school teachers are required
to have the education and certification to work in their field.

(3) I have a time tested approach with many successful students . Many of my students
are actively involved in church music, bands and reaching their musical goals.

(4) I add value to lessons. Guitar students get a free instruction DVD or CD each month
that they take lessons. Vocal students are given warm up Cd's to help them vocalize
daily.

(5) I also offer group instruction. Group instruction has many benefits such as longer lesson
time and interaction with other students and cost.

EZ Guitar On Line

Several months ago I mentioned teaching lessons on line. I have finally come up with the solution. You don't have to drive to weekly lessons, you progress at your own pace, You have weekly coaching and you pay less than half the price of private lessons.

The way that I am teaching this method is by video. Students who enroll in EZ Guitar will receive a monthly DVD by mail as well as weekly phone calls to make sure they understand and that progress is being made.

The cost for these lessons is $36 per month. Each DVD has 5 lessons and as students watch and play along with the video each day they will see results. So far I have produced 3 DVD and my goal is to have 6 by the end of the Summer. So for this year my goal is to have enough video's for 6 months.

The focus for the first 6 months is rhythm guitar. You will get a good dose of theory as well. At the end of six months the student will have enough knowledge and playing ability to perform the majority of pop, country, gospel and rock songs.

Summer Lessons

Whether or not to take music during the summer months when school is out is a divided issue with many parents and music teachers. Many parents decide to stop lessons during the summer because of vacations and summer activities. Instead of giving this issue a yes or no answer I would like to approach the question from different angles.
Summer can be a time of expanded learning for many children. Many kids get board during the
Summer with nothing to do and having private music lessons or classes gives them something to keep their mind occupied . I have had great success with the music programs at the Opelika Recreation Center during the Summer months. Parents drop their children off to take classes and to swim after the classes . It's a great concept and I usually average 20 students. That makes up for the private students that I loose during the Summer.
If a child has problems with finding time to practice and views the summer as a break from music, this is a recipe for disaster. Parents who make this choice have waisted a lot of money on lessons because the child will have to start from the beginning when school starts back again.
Summer months can also be a time of reflection and reviewing what the child has learned during the past school year and start back refreshed when school starts back again. I am offering a mentoring program for students who decide to take the Summer off . For more information on this free service to my students , please let me know what your plans are for the Summer and how we can work together to make sure that the chain of learning is not lost.

On Monday and Thursday I teach at my home at 1004 Crest Club Circle, Valley
Alabama and on Tuesdays at Toms Music in LaGrange. I have only a few slots

On your first lesson I will evaluate where you are at with your music knowledge,
interest and skill level. Each student is different in their approach to learning .
I will help design a program that best suits your needs and
goals. Within a short length of time you will see progress as we work toward your
goals.

the end of the first lesson I will let you know what materials you need to purchase.
I can also give you advice on instrument purchases.

Over the past 20 years I have taught hundreds of students and helped them reach

starting June 5. The classes will be every Tuesday morning. The registration cost is $50

One of my goals this year is to establish several music schools throughout the greater Valley area. The first school will be at Evangel Temple Assembly Of God in Valley. We will start on
January 9th. The advantage of music classes is that students can learn from each other as well as from the teacher. The cost of group lessons is also less expensive. For a group of 5 students taking either guitar or piano the cost would be $32 per month instead of $60 for private lessons. On one of my first post I shared about my trip to Canton Ohio during Christmas to visit one of my best friends Scott Cecil. Saturday evening I recieved a call from Scotts step dad Jim and his mom Agie. On Thanksgiving day Scott went to be with the Lord. He will be greatly missed and I count him as one of my closest friends. Scott had a genuine love for people as well as a tremendous knowledge of the technical side of music and about computers. Most of what I have learned about computers came from Scott and he also designed my web site. Please keep Jim and Agie and the rest of Scotts family in your prayers. As a result of this tragic death they both have grown closer to the Lord.

HOW TO FIND A GOOD PRIVATE MUSIC INSTRUCTOR

Many people tend to believe that the best musicians make the best teachers.
Though music teachers have to continually hone their ability and practice just
like students do, the best musician does not always make the best private
instructor. Professional music performers usually make poor teachers and
music teachers are usually not the best performers in the world. You see, the
further away a person gets from the basics of learning an instrument the less
patient they will be with the beginner student. Great music teachers know how
to motivate students. Every student is different in their ability and learning
style. A good teacher will recognize the student's strengths and abilities and
help that student reach his or her musical goals. Teaching is a whole different
game from performing. A good teacher knows different methods and is able to
apply those methods to the individual student. A good music teacher should be
patient with the student. And the learning process should be enjoyable. The old
school of learning music was strict discipline. Beethoven was punished by his father
every time that he missed a note. If music is to be played it should be enjoyed both
by the performer and the listener. If it is enjoyable, the student will look forward to
every practice session and lesson.
